Five Generations Since 1976: The Story Behind the OG Hot Hatch Tee
Share
It was not supposed to matter. In 1976 a German maker took its sensible new family hatchback, gave it a slightly bigger engine (1.6 litres, 110 horsepower, which was a lot for a car that weighed about 810 kilograms), stiffened the suspension, put a red stripe around the grille, tartan on the seats and a dimpled ball on the gear lever, and sold it almost as an afterthought. The plan was five thousand cars. They built more than four hundred thousand of that first generation alone.
What it proved was simple and has never been un-proved: a small, light, front-drive car with a good engine is more fun on a real road than almost anything, and it can do the shopping on the way home. Every hot hatch since, from every maker, is a variation on that sentence.
Why we drew it from behind
Most car illustrations are three-quarter front views because that is where the badge is. We wanted the opposite. The view from behind is the one you actually get on the road, the one that makes you squint and go "is that a..." before it disappears. It is also the view where the generations tell their own story: each one a little wider, a little rounder, a little more grown up than the car ahead of it, the tail lamps going from two small squares to wide wraparound units.

The OG Hot Hatch Tee
$36.99
The OG Hot Hatch Tee lines up five generations nose to tail, the newest in dark blue at the front and the 1976 original in red at the back, every one drawn in flat colour with the plates left blank and no badges anywhere. SINCE 1976 runs underneath in wide capitals with the year in oxidised red, over a black, red and gold bar. Fifty years of the same good idea.
Shop the teeWhy it is one in three orders
We looked at every order since launch and a third of them are this shirt. It is not the loudest thing we make. It wins, we think, because it passes the two-room test: it looks right at a cars-and-coffee and it looks right at dinner afterwards. The people who know, know. The people who do not just see a well-drawn row of cars.
Fifty years of the same good idea.
