There is exactly one car shape you can draw with a single unbroken line and have a stranger name it. Bonnet low, windscreen raked, roofline falling in one long curve to a tail that sits over the engine. It has been the same shape since 1963, through air cooling and water cooling, through carburettors and turbos and hybrid systems, because the people who make it understood something most car makers never do: when you get the line right, you keep it.

The engine in the wrong place

The thing that gives the car its silhouette is also the thing that gives it its reputation. The engine, a flat-six, sits behind the rear axle. That puts the weight in the back, which is why the car squats and bites on the way out of a corner, and why, in the early turbo years, it could swap ends on the way in if you lifted off at the wrong moment. The 1975 turbo made 260 horsepower, the 1978 version 300 with an intercooler and 3.3 litres, and both had four gears and a turbo that arrived all at once. Enthusiasts called it the widow-maker. They also bought every one.

When you get the line right, you keep it.

Air cooling is the other half of the story. No radiator, no coolant, just a big fan and fins on the cylinders, which is why the engine sounds the way it does: mechanical, slightly agricultural at idle, a hard metallic howl at the top. The last air-cooled version left the factory in 1998, and the cult started the next morning.
