The VR6 Soundtrack: The Story Behind the R32 Tee
Share
The R32 is what happens when engineers are allowed to answer a question nobody asked. The question was: what is the most engine you can fit in a hatchback engine bay? The answer was a 3.2-litre six-cylinder with its banks splayed at only fifteen degrees, so narrow that the two rows of cylinders share one cylinder head. A V-engine and a straight engine at once. They called it the VR6, and it fit, just, sideways.
Sound first, speed second
The first R32 arrived in 2002 with 240 horsepower, all-wheel drive, a six-speed manual, blue-painted brake calipers and a deep pearl-blue paint that became the colour of the car. In 2003 it was the first production car you could buy with a dual-clutch gearbox. It was quick for its day, under six and a half seconds to sixty, but that is not why anyone remembers it. They remember the noise: a VR6 does not so much rev as clear its throat and keep going, a thick, off-beat growl that no four-cylinder turbo has ever matched. The second R32 in 2005 added ten horsepower and kept the soundtrack. Then the turbo era arrived and the six was gone from the hatchback forever.
Which is why the R32 has a following out of proportion to its numbers. It was the last hot hatch built around a sound rather than a spreadsheet.
